sand_1.jpgIn every manufacturing operation, controlling costs and maximizing quality can be keys to continued success. In panel processing and solid wood applications, sanding belts constitute a significant expense for consumables and can contribute to serious quality problems in the finishing room if sanding operations are not properly monitored.

The most common operational error is improperly utilizing the entire width of the sander. This results in shortened belt life, belt loading, belt streaking, belt burning, and uneven belt and machine wear. These conditions further restrict the ability of the operator to utilize the full width of the belt, thus accelerating uneven machine wear. Operators must be trained to routinely place parts across the entire machine width and their performance must be monitored to insure compliance with this important requirement. This is the primary function of the SandTrac. By prompting the operator to feed in underutilized sections of the belt, and maintaining a log of where the material has been fed, improper feeding patterns can be easily recognized. This in turn allows the tracking of proper belt usage and the establishment of guidelines for more accurate utilization and extended usage of abrasive belts, thus resulting in significant savings over time.

The SandTracTM with TotalizerTM provides four
important functions to help correct these problems:

1. MONITORS - It consist of a highly visible light system located on the front of the machine directly over the in -feed conveyor belt, that reflects real-time usage patterns on a one to one scale.

2. PROMPTS - By measuring and indicating where product has been fed, this light system prompts the operator to feed parts in the least used sections of the bed.

3. TRACKS DATA - It allows the operator to maintain a log of usage statistics based on any variable that needs tracking. Items like individual belts, platens or even jobs can be tracked by amount of material fed into the machine and the average area of the belt used.

4. PROVIDES RESULTS - Facilitates improved, consistent, sanded surface quality due to achieving even abrasive mineral wear which is one of the factors affecting color variations. Evens out belt use and machine wear, extends belt life, reduces belt changes, downtime, and overall costs.

SandTrac System Includes:
One Prompter/Monitor device (consisting of 32”, 40”, 48”,
or 56” LED panel), Computer, SandTrac software with Totalizer,
universal mounting table and all necessary cabling.

Often, because of in-feed patterns and other production methods, sanding belts are changed and discarded unnecessarily. And, improper material feeding can result in uneven belt wear that makes consistent finish color control very difficult to achieve.
